Civic Memorial High School recently received a $2000 grant from OTSD (Operation Teen Safe Driving). The grant partners are Governor Pat Quinn, Secretary of State Jesse White, Ford Motor Company Fund, the Allstate Foundation, Illinois State Police/IDOT, Illinois State Board of Education, and the Governor's Highway Safety Association. The Department of Traffic Safety provided $1000 and the Allstate Foundation provided $1000 to Civic Memorial High School to provide a 3 month campaign for students to drive safely (to raise awareness for students on the hazards of distracted driving, impaired driving, and speeding). In addition to this grant, we received a $500 grant through IDOT and SWIC (called You Ride/You Decide...It's a Matter of CHOICE) to further enhance this initiative.
CM's LifeSavers club is spearheading this initiative, called Safe Ride, Eagle Pride. Some of the projects for the grant include: 2 seat belt surveys in the school parking lot, student-made posters displayed in the commons, student-written announcements read over the PA, safe driving facts in the student bathroom stalls, an all-school assembly by State Trooper Ralph Timmins (on 1/28/2010), a fatal vision goggles obstacle course during our 2 lunch periods (to be done on 1/15/2010), and an "Every 15 Minutes" activity (a program that challenges students to think about drinking, personal safety, and the responsibility of making mature decisions when lives are involved). Additionally, Trimpe Middle School students will be helping the initiative by making book marks.
The program runs from December 1st to February 27, 2010. The LifeSavers are very excited about Safe Ride, Eagle Pride, and urge students, parents, and staff to drive with reason! |
